The
opportunities for the European and American companies in
China are many and varied. China is a huge country, with
a vast amount of difference between different provinces,
in terms of culture, resources and official policy.

company in the UK and USA that has any international dimension
to its business should be considering a strategy for China.

of the Chinese economy, China is going to affect most of

Up until now, most of the businesses involved have been going to China for low cost manufacturing support and services, but mainly for export. However, with the increasing costs in China and competition from other countries, the advantage of low cost manufacturing will gradually lessen. I think that the next stage of development, which is potentially more interesting to you and European businesses in general, is in the area of services and businesses related to the emerging internal Chinese market. However, it is fundamentally important to know how to create unique selling points in order to avoid competing with the local Chinese market.
According
to Merrill Lynch, a leading financial management and advisory
company, in 2010, 250 million Chinese people can now afford to buy luxury goods. This is the combined population of the UK, France, Germany and Spain. Merrill Lynch also estimates that, by 2014, the Chinese could become the largest consumer of world luxury goods. China had 464,000 millionaires in 2009. This number is estimated to be rising by 12% per year. So we are witnessing the emergence of a substantial class of affluent consumers in China.

Although, the Chinese economy is growing very fast. The GDP growth in 2009 was 8.7%, 11.1% in the first 6 months of 2010. However, it is also an embryonic economy that has many product, technology and service “gaps” that need to be filled. As China continues to develop, a continual stream of new gaps will surface and create opportunities to start exciting, new companies and joint ventures. Hence, more Chinese businesspersons and companies are investing abroad to search for the right Western partners to fill in the gaps. Currently, there are more than 5000 joint venture involving UK companies and Chinese partners and each year an additional 400 new joint ventures are being entered into.
